1 External Hard Drive to work with both Mac and PC? What format (NTFS, FAT32 etc) should an external drive to be to move 'read & writeable' files to an Apple Mac? WD Hard Drive read only - using MAC OSX10.5.8? SSDs are an integral part of Mac OS X universe since they are readily used as standard storage devices for Mac. Some of the SSDs are set up as the startup disk to provide quick and efficient computing speed for OS X and Mac hardware. As compared to hard drives, Solid State Drives are small and lighter in size and weight. Compared to traditional hard drives, they offer lesser storage spaces and are costly. The main advantages of having an SSD over an HDD is of speed and performance. Moreover, unlike a hard drive, they don’t require special optimization techniques such as disk defragging. Mac users perform three activities that are quite common, and this article will cover up those activities in detail. The only difference is that 3rd party applications and not Disk Utility will perform these tasks. Below are those three common tasks to be carried out on an SSD: • Backup SSD through Drive Clone software • Partition SSD through Partition Manager software • Recover an SSD through Data Recovery software Cloning Recovery HD to SSD Drive Using Stellar Drive Clone utility, the SSD will be backed up to – from another hard disk. ![]() In the below screenshot, I am cloning my Recovery HD to the mounted solid-state drive. Please read the process carefully: Step 1) Source drive is ‘Recovery HD.’ Step 2) Destination drive is ‘My SSD.’ Step 3) Press Continue to proceed Step 4) As you can see, the disk cloning process is under way upon progressing positively Step 5) Process completed successfully Cloning hard drive to SSD Now, in this case, we clone an external hard drive to a mounted SSD. Please read the below software instructions carefully: Step 1) Source hard drive is selected Step 2) SSD remains the destination disk Step 3) Press Continue to launch the cloning process Step 4) The process of cloning a hard drive to a solid state drive is in progress and completed successfully The above concludes up cloning an SSD to and from a hard drive using the mentioned Mac application. Note: To active the applications, the registration is mandatory. And now, we proceed with partitioning a solid-state drive with partition manager utility. Partitioning and Resizing SSD on Mac The application used to show disk related activities on the solid- state drive is Stellar Partition Manager. Please go through the below-mentioned steps: Step 1) Select the SSD from the left side of software menu Step 2) The software displays the occupied spaces and available free spaces Step 3) With the help of the mouse, get hold of the partition edge and move it upwards / downwards to increase and decrease the size of SSD Step 4) The more you move upward, freer spaces get accumulated for the creation of a new partition on SSD. More you go downwards, the SSD size increases and free spaces gets consumed You can use the free spaces for adding a new partition on the solid-state drive, once resizing is done efficiently. Step 5) Click ‘Add’ from software top menu Step 6) Provide ‘Volume Name’, ‘Volume Size’ and ‘Partition Type.’ Step 7) Apply all the changes and the software will create the additional partition on your SSD Similarly, you can delete / format / hide / reveal a partition on SSD using Stellar Partition Manager application. For managing startup disks on Mac OS X, you need to create a bootable USB to perform tasks on startup Solid State Drive.
