It contains video, sound and sometimes subtitles. VLC, mplayerOS and quicktime usually read.avi files but actually it only depends on the video format or codec. Being a.avi is not sufficient. There are two main codecs that can't be read by VLC on mac: windows media and real media. When a new version of real media player or windowsMP arrives on PC, there are new codes, like rmv9 for Media player 9.
